Sandwich Making for the Homeless

Sandwich making has been a monthly Meeting activity for decades. The committee’s responsibilities include:

• Preparing as many sandwiches as our Meeting refrigerator can hold (that's 240 sandwiches) on the fourth Sunday of each month during fellowship.  Each sandwich consists of two pieces of sourdough bread and two slices of cheese, with mustard between the slices. 

• Buying for each sandwich-making operation 22 loaves of sourdough bread, 480 slices (20 pounds) of sliced cheese, super-size bottles of mustard, Ziplock bags, and plastic gloves for the sandwich-makers.

• Arranging to have the sandwiches delivered to the Ocean Park Community Center at 503 Olympic Blvd. On Wednesday and Thursday, Project H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Eat) provides a hot meal at 3 pm to 100-125 homeless people. Our sandwiches are distributed as a take-along for later (which is why we wrap them individually in Ziplock bags). We are the only church group doing this service for Project H.O.P.E. Most months, a committee member accompanies our delivery person to Top Value, where we buy some discount produce to go with the sandwiches. • Encouraging our community to take part in making the sandwiches. Though the clerk and several loyal members take care of obtaining the necessary ingredients and delivering the finished sandwiches, we are entirely dependent on the participation of Meeting members and attenders for the actual making of the sandwiches. Because of the stability of our operation, our committee's only meetings have been those in which we actually make sandwiches.

• Presenting to the Finance Committee in November of each year our yearly budget, which needs to be approved.
